How often should you tidy up your beard?

Beard hair grows at roughly the same rate as the hair on your head — about a centimeter a month. How often it’s worth tidying up, though, usually depends more on the style of beard than on how fast it grows.

A short, sharply lined beard typically starts to look untidy after two or three weeks, because the neckline and cheek lines are the first to grow in. A longer beard tends to hold its shape for longer, because new growth blends in better with a fuller beard. Even so, it’s worth tidying up regularly.

M Beard or M Beard XL?

As with our haircuts, the difference between the beard services is in how extensive the work is, not in quality. With M Beard, the beard is tidied up within the shape it already has. With M Beard XL, the beard and its shape are usually reworked more radically relative to your starting point.

Choose M Beard XL when one of these applies:

• you want a distinctly different shape for your beard
• the beard is being shortened significantly
• natural growth lines are being moved, on the cheeks or the neck for example
• you want your beard lines finished with a razor.

As with haircuts, what decides it is your starting point and the amount of work involved, not just the result you have in mind.

If you’re unsure, tell your barber what you want. They’ll tell you before starting which service matches what you’re after.

Clippers or razor?

With M Beard, the lines are done with clippers. Clippers are fast, well suited to precise work, and the result is clean.

A razor gets slightly closer to the skin, which makes the line sharper and usually keeps it looking clean for longer. A razor line-up is included in M Beard XL. If you want one with M Beard, you can add the M Razor service for €7.

With M Special Shave, the whole beard is shaved off the traditional way, with a straight razor.

What moving your beard lines means for upkeep

A beard has natural lines: on the neck, on the cheeks and above the mustache. When the lines are cleaned up along these natural growth lines, the beard grows back neatly and needs no special attention.

With M Beard XL, the lines can be moved noticeably, which naturally changes the shape of the beard more. A moved line does usually take more upkeep than a natural growth line. Hair grows back where it was cut, so the lines may need tidying up more often, even when they were done with a razor to begin with.

Your barber will go through this with you before starting, so you know what you’re committing to.

What’s included in the price?

M Beard includes trimming the beard to length where needed, plus lining up the neck, cheeks and mustache with clippers.

M Beard XL includes razor line-ups and hot towels. M Special Shave is more of an experience: the beard is shaved off completely, and alongside the hot towels the service includes a facial massage. So while M Beard XL and M Special Shave cost the same, they are entirely different services.

A beard service alongside a haircut

A beard service can be bought on its own or in the same visit as a haircut. If you want both, say so when you join the queue, or at the latest to your barber, so that enough time is set aside.
