How often should you get a haircut?

Hair grows an average of about a centimeter a month, but how quickly a style loses its shape usually depends more on the style than on how fast your hair grows.

A short, faded style typically starts to look untidy after three or four weeks, because the fade is the first thing to lose its definition. A longer style usually holds for six to ten weeks, because new growth blends in better with longer hair.

The rule of thumb is simple: if your last cut is still recognizable, M Cut will generally do. If the style has grown out, it’s M Cut XL. The longer you wait, the more there is to cut and the more the visit costs.

M Cut or M Cut XL?

The difference between M Cut and M Cut XL isn’t quality, it’s how extensive the work is. With M Cut, the hair is tidied back into a style that is still visible when you arrive. With M Cut XL, the style is planned and built from scratch, one way or another.

Choose M Cut XL when one of these applies:

• you want to change your hairstyle
• it’s been around three months or more since your last cut, and the previous style is no longer visible
• the hair is being shortened significantly, from shoulder length to a short style for example
• you’re planning something more demanding, technically or in terms of time.

So what decides it is the starting point of your hair and how far from it you need to get. The same end result can be delivered as either M Cut or M Cut XL, depending on how much work getting there takes. With long hair, choose M Cut XL even if you’re only coming in to trim the ends — washing and drying long hair properly takes time.

Scissors, clippers or both?

A barber’s main tool is a pair of scissors, used for cutting, thinning and shaping. With some longer styles, clippers aren’t needed at all.

In a buzz cut (“M Buzz Cut”), the whole head is clipped to a single length. In other cuts, clippers are used for finishing — cleaning up the lines and fading the sides, for example.

A fade means the hair length changes gradually from short to longer on the sides and at the back. A clipper fade is included in M Cut and M Cut XL where needed; a fade taken down to the skin with a razor (“M Skinfade”) is available as an add-on service.

What’s included in the price?

At M Room, a haircut always includes a wash and a scalp massage. M Cut services also include a quick facial moisturizing treatment and a finish with styling products. M Buzz Cut includes the wash and the quick facial moisturizing treatment only.

Beard grooming is not included in a haircut and is charged separately. We offer a range of beard services.

You can also add M Premium Extra services to your cut for €7–12 each. These include a razor line-up, an extended scalp massage, and nose or ear waxing.

Why is hair always washed before the cut?

The wash is always included in the price and can’t be left out. We wash your hair for two reasons.

Freshly washed hair is closest to its natural state, which lets us see the whole picture as it really is, right down to your hair parting and if there’s any cowlicks. A hat, for instance, can press the hair into a position that shifts the parting and changes how the hair sets. If the cut is done on hair flattened like that, the result will look very different the next time you wash it.

The second reason is our tools. Dirt, styling products, dust and grit in unwashed hair and on the scalp will dull even the best scissors quickly and shorten their working life.
